In one respect, I was SO GRATEFUL to do this section of road because it’s incredibly beautiful and so little-traveled that I had zero worries about getting run over. The mountain changes shape every day due to the circular wind patterns in the valley (which are also the reason the mountain of sand is there in the first place.) It’s most commonly used by four-wheelers and other ATV fans who camp at the base of the mountain and spend their days climbing up its varied terrain. Legend has it that a Wells Fargo wagon loaded with gold was passing through the valley back in the late 19th century, and parked near Sand Mountain at night. When whoever was driving the wagon woke the next morning, it was gone; the wind and sand had engulfed the wagon and all that was inside.
